The Rosa Parks lace panty actually got me, because how does a design go through multiple people, multiple dress fittings, and you mean to tell me nobody saw it? Nobody thought, ‘Hey! maybe not?’

EVERY time i think I've finally gotten over it, the brazeness of it hits me all over again. beyond maddening but this is what happens when you are surrounded by white people and black sycophants with low racial self esteem 🙃

I found this post through a Substack roundup and RAN here because this is the first I heard of it and I literally could not believe it. I haven't heard of that K-pop girlie, but good lord... I mean, I'm a 45 year old white Australian woman and I shrieked at that close up. What is happening in people's brains to not only make the Rosa Parks underwear, but to wear it?

I love Lisa but that moment was so insane 😭 I feel it’s more of a major mess up by the design team than her but she also should have thought “hey maybe not?”. But on the author’s point about her wearing box braids and grills in music videos, unfortunately kpop idols are hyper controlled and designed by their companies so in instances such as those she really had no choice. But The Met panties was just insane work

rosa parks on a lace panty donned by a perpetual cultural appropriator of blackness at one of the most prestigious events in fashion under a theme that claims to celebrate and honor black culture, fashion, and history. god send the flood.

It was so clear from the interviews with non-black attendees how uncomfortable they were talking about the theme in relation to black culture - lots of discussions of “tailoring,” not so much discussion of black dandyism. They did a good job skirting around the whole picture.

This was such a great analysis - the people who did their homework really soared (Lewis Hamilton was a favorite look of mine), most everyone else, not so much.

This is such a good roundup of last night’s met gala activities. Some great outfits but also huge misses and atrocities like the aforementioned panties Lisa wore (Pharrell wthelly), central cee and his black baby prop as well. Big yikes. In all honesty I thought people would make more of an error considering the theme. An article I wrote for ARTnews that came out today about the depiction of the black dandy in art over the past 300 years, made me even more picky on what people wore. Like some of them did not do their homework

Well, I wasn’t a fan of Lisa before, but now I’m even less of a fan! Rosa Parks panties is honestly one of the most sacrilegious things I’ve ever seen. Some great commentary, I thank you for enlightening me!!!

the fact that all of twitter was already dreading the white people in durags after the theme was announced and someone *still* did it. mind boggling.

the artist who collaborated with LV on the face illustrations has come out and stated that it is not Rosa Parks, but it’s still egregious imo

I missed the met gala and didn't know the theme, so it was really interesting to read your explanation of black dandyism and see how certain guests made such interesting and thoughtful historical allusions (although, clearly plenty did NOT)!

What’s more crazy about the Rosa parks panties(weird words being put together) is that I don’t think even Lisa herself knows who Rosa Parks is, so where do we go from here?!

It was highly distasteful and disrespectful, but it’s Lisa and I’ve learned not to expect much from her with her history of picking and choosing when she wants to be black and when she wants to be Asian, like it’s a costume. Only God knows what else she has in store for us.

Also, Pharrell Williams-how disappointing of a black man but not surprising.

This was a good read, thank you.

I LOVE this piece as always. my faves were (I’m so sorry for the long ass list) teyana taylor, doechii, tems, Lupita nyong’o, Simone biles, jennie kim, zendaya, coco jones, ego nwodim and almost all the men (save for the plain black suit/boring guys because Come On Bro.)
